Set in 2114, this futuristic tale envisions an advanced world free from several present-day problems such as war, famine, climate change, resource shortages, violent crimes, and traffic congestion. The Quantum Plasma Fuel Mechanism (or the Engine) and the first time machine were created in 2024, and they kept evolving into the technological marvel we know today. As with any invention, there is always a possibility that people will exploit it for their own gain and with nefarious intentions.

In this case, T.E.A.M, the Time Enforcement Advanced Missions Agency, under the leadership of Kelley Freeman and supervised by Captain Ben Thompson and Exley James, has entered the scene to tackle the issue. A new underground group called The Union of Ophidian has emerged as a threat, and after identifying the mole that has penetrated deep into their organization, Ben and the rest of T.E.A.M. find themselves in the middle of a Time Realignment that occurs right before their eyes.

After capturing Hanson, Ben realizes that he is too late for revenge. As Hanson gloats, a new reality unfolds, transforming Captain Ben Thompson into Public Enemy Number 1. The Union of Ophidian and Hanson have seized control over Quantum Plasma Technology and the Engine, creating a corrupt society despite its technological advancements. Ben is racing against time to restore the past and safeguard the future. Hanson and the Union of Ophidian threaten to control the future, making it imperative for Ben to act quickly.

"The Engine" by Derrick Whitfield is a captivating science fiction thriller that takes readers on a mind-bending journey through time. Filled with twists and turns, this novel is a true testament to the author's creativity and ability to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Set in the year 2114, the story revolves around Captain Ben Thompson, a dedicated member of T.E.A.M. (Time Enforcement Advanced Missions) agency. However, an unexpected event shakes his world when he becomes a victim of a Time Realignment. Now, trapped in an altered reality, Ben must confront a formidable adversary, the rogue level 9 agent known as Hanson, and restore the timeline to its original state.

Whitfield's writing skillfully immerses readers in a world where time travel and the consequences of altering history become all too real. The intricate plot unfolds with precision, offering a thrilling and unpredictable narrative that keeps readers guessing at every turn. As Ben races against the clock, the stakes escalate, and the tension intensifies, making it nearly impossible to put the book down.

One of the highlights of "The Engine" is the depth and complexity of its characters. Ben Thompson is a compelling protagonist, driven by his determination to set things right. The reader becomes deeply invested in his journey, experiencing his struggles, doubts, and unwavering resolve. The enigmatic antagonist, Hanson, adds an extra layer of intrigue and mystery to the story, making for a compelling cat-and-mouse dynamic between the two.

Whitfield's mastery of storytelling shines through the seamless integration of time travel elements into the narrative. The concept of Time Realignment, as well as the intricacies of the time-traveling technology, are skillfully explained, allowing readers to suspend disbelief and fully engage with the story. The author's attention to detail and ability to create a coherent and believable time-bending plot is commendable.

"The Engine" is a rollercoaster ride of suspense, action, and intellectual stimulation. Each chapter reveals new revelations, challenges, and unexpected consequences, ensuring that readers are constantly engaged. From heart-pounding chase sequences to intricate puzzle-solving, the novel keeps the adrenaline pumping while also provoking thought-provoking questions about the nature of time and its implications.

The only thing is that I wish the language was active and tense to give it that action scene-like feel for the action scenes. Still overall, "The Engine" is a remarkable work of fiction that showcases Derrick Whitfield's talent for crafting compelling stories in the realm of science fiction. With its clever plot twists, well-developed characters, and a narrative brimming with creativity, this book is sure to satisfy fans of the genre. Prepare to be taken on a thrilling adventure through time that will leave you questioning the very fabric of reality.
